This breed owes its name to the Toledo district of Talavera de la Reina, which was once the main centre for the sale of this breed and its wool. It is the product of old cross-breeding between two large breeds: the Merino and the Manchego. Although it is traditionally bred free-range, especially in cork-oak dehesas, such as El Arreciado. The Talaverana was traditionally bred for its wool production, but nowadays also for its meat and milk.
